Zinc reacts with oxygen in the air to form a dense zinc oxide (ZnO) protective film. When this protective film is damaged, zinc will preferentially react with corrosive media in the surrounding environment (such as moisture, acidic substances, etc.), thereby protecting the steel coil substrate from corrosion. For example, in some coastal areas, there is a relatively high salt content in the air, which is highly corrosive to metals. Buildings' roofs, guardrails and other facilities made of galvanized steel coils can effectively resist salt - fog erosion and extend their service lives.
Galvanized steel coils retain the good processing properties of steel to a certain extent. During processing such as stamping, bending, and stretching, the zinc layer can deform along with the steel substrate and will not fall off easily. For example, in the automobile manufacturing process, galvanized steel coils are used to make body parts. When complex stamping and forming operations are carried out, the zinc layer can adapt to the shape changes of the parts while still maintaining protection for the steel substrate.
